The Wines

Our first vintage, 2003, was a great success. We've held back our remaining bottles to enjoy as the years go by. We are presently offering five wines from two different years: 2004 and 2005.

Two whites were chosen for their contrasting characters: 2004 Vermentino and 2005 Volterra Reserve Blanc.

The 2004 Vermentino is a crisp fleural wine on the nose. In the mouth, its barrel-fermented character bursts forth with freshly buttered toast. It is a full-bodied, round and weighty wine with good acidity that lingers very pleasantly on the palate. (See here for technical notes). €10

The 2005 Volterra Reserve Blanc is a heavier wine characterised by ripe peaches and lemons, accompanied with fresh buttered toast. It is a full-bodied, round and weighty wine with good acidity that lingers very pleasantly on the palate (see here for technical notes). €12

The three reds on offer at this time are all excellent examples of the high quality wines that we produce. When a wine from a single grape variety is particularly striking we showcase that varietal, as indicated on our labels, while carefully blending in other varietals to create a well-balanced wine from beginning to end. In this vein, the 2004 vintage gave rise to three outstanding wine, each showcasing a particular varietal: Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. We are holding back the latter because we feel with a few more years it will be absolutely exceptional. The Grenache and the Syrah are drinking very well now, although they too, have aging potential (see blow). The third red we are offering at this time is the 2005 Volterra Reserve Rouge.

The 2005 Volterra Reserve Rouge is a blend of four grape varieties working in synergy to produce a complex, medium bodied, opaque wine. The nose evokes plums and violets. These carry throught to the mouth where hints of pepper and autum leaves are added. The tannins are agreeable. The finish is long and balance (see here for technical notes). €12

The 2004 Grenache was blended with Syrah and Mouvèdre to complement the lively dark fruit of Grenache with the fuller bodied, spicy Syrah and red berries and acidity of Mouvèdre. This wine is a symphony of cherries and thyme, truffles and violets, plums and citrus. The tannins are light and pleasant, making this an ideal choice when a lighter wine is desired (see here for detailed technical notes). €15

The 2004 Syrah is a very bold, complex wine that seduces the eye with its impenetrable depths, the nose with its richness of aromas and the mouth with its complexity of flavours: cigar box, coffee and vanilla combined with strawberry jam and lemons topped with dark chocolate and spicy white pepper. All these aromas and flavours are supported by ample tannins and balanced acidity. A great wine for dishes that need a stronger partner (see here for technical notes). €15
